The Usual Tech Ramblings

Domain Cleanups, and Broken Tasks

I did some AD cleanup yesterday, including removing some accounts that have been disabled for over a year. This is all part of our migration plans to move to integration1.

What I didn’t notice was one of those accounts was for an employee that hadn’t been with the company for several months, but was still live. It was still live, because the department was still actively using it. This is a bad thing™.

  1. Integrate isn’t really the right word, we’re trashing our old AD domain, and moving to a tree in the corporate forest. The less I have to move, the better it’ll be for my sanity

New Kitchen Toys

I upgraded one of our kitchen toys this weekend… Got a new knife set, now I can look like a real chef, even if I cannot quite cook like one. Maybe I’ll start going to courses, or just grab a few books, and randomly pick recipes to try.

BBC Headlines...

I’ve noticed in the past that the BBC has a habbit of picking interesting headlines. Here is this weeks.

More cash to beat school bullies

Again, BBC with an ironic headline. Wouldn’t it be nice if the government was really handing out cash to bring back school beatings ;)

Moving...

Well… my server is anyway. After the unexplained stability issues I’ve been having with my own server, I’ve decided to take the leap into a dedicated server at a proper data center. Not only did I move data centers, but I moved platforms. I’ve decided to swing over to Debian Etch, from a Gentoo box. This, again, was for stability. I was finding it too difficult to keep Gentoo up to date with security updates, whilst not having to rebuild half the system. The Debian team do a good job on not making you upgrade dozens of packages on security updates.

Looping Directories, and Bad "Encryption"

I have a terrible memory, which is why I’ve started keeping this blog, so I can remind myself on how I’ve fixed stuff, and if somebody else finds it useful, then an added bonus. As I mentioned in my previous post, I mentioned that I was cleaning up our images server. This lead to a simple PHP script, which processed the output of dir /b /A-D /S, however, this produced a huge text file (1.2 GB to be more precise). So I decided to break it down.

Am I right?

Am I right for the job I do? Last week whilst out of town, it dawned on me at dinner, that I know very little about the job I do. Well, more specifically the industry in which I do my job. I work in the automotive industry, and while I know a bit about cars, or at least used to, I know little to nothing of the industry itself.

Subtle Reminders...

I’m out of town this week on a business trip, and it seems no mater where I look, there are subtle reminders of home… Like the menu for breakfast.

CapitalOne and Fraud

Earlier this morning, I received an email from “The CapitalOne Fraud Department”, claiming to have been trying to reach me concerning fraudulent activity on my email account.
